NYC –> Shanghai, 39 days & counting: Shh…it’s a Secret

August 2nd, 2013. 39 days.

One of the things I absolutely love most about my beloved East Village neighborhood is its splendidly pleasant “secret gardens!” The one pictured here, 6BC Botanical Garden, is one of the larger, more manicured community gardens in the area, but they come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and “dispositions!” I’m particularly fond of an especially tiny one near our apartment with a Puerto Rican flag proudly on display that frequently has boisterous older men playing dominos and drinking beer. The scene reminds me a bit of “Weh-che-steh, Mee-ya-me” – my hometown (although sadly, Miami cannot boast these kinds of hidden treasures). These community gardens are a HUGE asset to this neighborhood and to NYC overall, serving not only as urban oases, but as sources of nourishment – both literally and figuratively – for the community. I feel especially grateful that there are so many (39 in fact!) within a few minutes walk of my doorstep. I already know a version of this exists in Shanghai, but many seem to be located inside the gates of residential communities – hopefully, I’ll find them to be as welcoming as my East Village ones are!
